How to Remove the Background from a Photo on an iPhone

You may only want the dog, product or person from a picture, not everything behind it. An iPhone can lift a clear subject and let you paste or share the cut-out elsewhere.

This feature is quick, but it is not a full photo editor. It works by isolating the main subject it detects.

Lift the Subject

Open a photo full screen in Photos. You can also pause a video on the frame you want. Touch and hold the subject until a bright outline appears.

Choose Copy to place the cut-out on the clipboard, or Share to send it straight to another app. Add Sticker turns the subject into a reusable sticker.

Paste It Where You Need It

After choosing Copy, open a message, note, email or another app that accepts pasted images. Touch and hold in the destination, then tap Paste.

You can also keep holding the subject and use another finger to open a different app, then drag the cut-out into a document that supports it.

Choose a Photo with Clear Edges

  • Put the subject against a different colour or tone.
  • Avoid pictures where hair, fur or clothing blends into the background.
  • Use a sharp frame rather than one blurred by movement.
  • Check narrow gaps, fingers and fine edges after pasting.

Understand the Result

The pasted item may look excellent in a casual message but show rough edges on a large design. Complex shadows and transparent objects are harder to separate cleanly.

Try another frame or angle when the outline misses part of the subject. The best source image often improves the cut-out more than repeated attempts on a difficult photo.
