An unfamiliar flower in the garden or a building from an old holiday photo may already have a clue attached to it. Visual Look Up can suggest what appears in certain images on an iPhone.
Look for the Starred Information Button
Open a photo in full screen. If the Information button shows small stars or a symbol linked to the subject, tap it. Choose Look Up near the top of the photo details to see possible results.
The same method can work on a paused video frame. It is also available for some images viewed in Safari and Quick Look.
What It May Recognise

- Pets and other animals
- Architectural landmarks and popular statues
- Famous art, books and food
A result might show a likely name, related pictures or further information. The choices differ according to the subject and what the phone can match.
Try a Better Picture
Use a frame where the main object is large and not hidden behind other items. For a plant, include clear leaves or flowers. For a landmark, choose an angle that shows its distinctive shape.
Know When to Check Elsewhere
Visual Look Up offers a suggestion, not a guaranteed identification. Do not rely on it to decide whether a plant, mushroom or animal is safe to touch or eat. Seek a qualified source where health or safety is involved.
The feature is not offered in every language or region, and a starred button will not appear for every image. When it does appear, use the answer as a useful starting point rather than final proof.
